Stanley Vale Merino Stud - News & Views

Happy 93rd Birthday Kevin.

Nothing, not even Thursday being his 93rd birthday, was going to stop Kevin Bower from being in the shed while the weaners were being shorn this week.

Tim, Kevin's son, has been known to say:

"Dad's never retired, just slowed down a little"

From a young age Kevin worked along side his father, Fred, brothers Frank & Jack and sister Mary at Stanley Vale. Kevin has always been open-minded to new initiatives with  Stanley Vale one of the first farms in the area to get electricity. Kevin has overseen major changes at Stanley Vale including the move from horses to diesel tractors and motorbikes.

In a clear case of like father, like son, Tim and Dom, the 5th and 6th generations of Bowers to farm at Stanley Vale are also open to new technologies which complement traditional classing techniques. Since the early 2000s individual animal fleece measurements have been used to assist with classing the weaner clip. All stud rams also have their data submitted to obtain ASBVs. Since Dom returned to the farm data recording has been streamlined with the introduction of Alflex EID tags and wand reader and computer software package Stockbook.
